The year of 1923 is unfortunately linked with the death of hundreds of thousands of people because of the Great Kanto Earthquake. This is also the year in which Vladimir Lennin had to retire from his position as Soviet Government Chairman.

Important dates

  • The Ruhr area is occupied by French and German troops with the purpose of forcing Germany to pay reparation payments. This happened on the 11th of January.
  • On the 16th of February the burial ground of Tutankhamun was discovered by Howard Carter.
  • The whole month of March presented a major production in Jean Cocteau’s Antigone, featuring settings by Pablo Picasso, Gabrielle Chanel costumes and Arthur Honegger signed the music
  • Soviet Government Chairman Vladimir Lennin suffers his third stroke making him unable to speak and bedridden on the 9th of March. Because of the incident he retired from his position.
  • July 18 – 60,000 people became homeless because of the eruption of the Etna Volcano
  • On the night of July 19th, Pancho Villa was assassinated
  • A major earthquake struck Tokyo and Yokohama on the 1st of September. 142,807 people were killed by what was named the Great Kanto
  • The Ottoman Empire dissolute and the Republic of Turkey appeared on the 29th of October
  • December 12 – 600 people die because Po River Dam burst

Dates of birth

Several people that were to become important were born in 1923. Several artists, actors, sportsmen, Nobel Prize winners, scientists, writers and politicians are on the list. Examples can be provided in:

  • Winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine born in 1923 are Arvid Carlsson (Swedish, January 25) and Daniel Carleton Gajdusek (American virologist, September 9)
  • Other Nobel Prize winners were Walter Kohn (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, March 9), Henry Kissinger (Nobel Peace Prize, May 27), Shimon Peres (Nobel Peace Prize, August 21) and Jack Kilby (Nobel Prize in Physics, November 8). Several other Nobel Prize laureates were also born in 1923
  • Sam Philips – a notable record producer born on the 5th of January
  • March 21 - Shri Mataji Nirmala Srivastava, founder of a new type of Yoga that was to be called Sahaja Yoga
  • April 22 – One of the most important television producers and writers ever, Aaron Spelling.
  • April 30 – American actor Al Lewis, which died in 2006
  • Rocky Marciano, one of the best American boxers ever was born on the 1st of September
  • On Christmas day, the 25th of December, Sonia Olschanezky, a World War II heroine that died in 1944.
