The year 1914 is the one that saw the birth of many people that would later become Nobel Prize winners. This is often forgotten as the most important event that happened during the year was the beginning of World War I because of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. Because of the murder and the denial of Serbia to meet Austrian demands the Austria-Hungary alliance declared war against the country and the war was about to begin.

Important Events

  • On February 13th the ASCAP (American Societz for Composers, Authors and Publishers) was established in New York City. The reason behind the founding was to provide protection for musical compositions making it illegal to copy material created by other artists.
  • The first ever blood transfusion done with the help of anticoagulants was done by A. Hustin, a Bulgarian surgeon that made the breakthrough operation on March the 17th. This huge success laid the foundation for several other practices that are considered common nowadays.
  • Franz Ferdinand was assassinated the 18th of June by Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip. He was the Archduke of Austria and was murdered together with his wife. Because of this event World War I was about to begin.
  • July the 7th saw the meeting of Austrian and Hungarian ministers in a council that was to discuss the possibility that the alliance between the two countries would attack Serbia.
  • On July the 28th the First World War began with the alliance of Hungary and Austria declaring war against Serbia. The reason behind it was that the country did not meet the demands issued on July 23, following the murder of Franz Ferdinand. Austria wanted to be allowed to find out whom the killer was and the reason behind the assassination.
  • In the period between the 1st and the 4th of August several alliances have been signed with the purpose of getting involved in the current war.
  • December 24th was when the Christmas truce of World War I started. The troops of both Germany and Britain stopped the war to celebrate Christmas.

  • February 5th – Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine winner, British scientist Alan Lloyd Hodgkin
  • February 22nd – Renato Bulbecco whom later received the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine
  • March 25th – American scientist Norman Borlaug, winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace
  • May 19th – Biologist Max Perutz, recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry
  • August 17th - Gabrielle Weidner, Belgian heroine in World War II
  • October 1st – American writer and historian Daniel J. Boorstin, whom would become Librarian of Congress.
