1896 remains in history for two major events: the discovery of X-Ray and the tornado that hit Missouri, affecting over 1,000 people and killing 255. A Summer Olympics also took place and an earthquake in Japan killed 27,000 people.

  • On the fourth of January Utah is admitted in the USA as the 45th state.
  • January 5 - Wilhelm Röntgen discovered a new type of radiation that proved to be the X-Ray. One week later the first x-ray photograph was taken by H.L. Smith and on the 18th of the same month the first x-ray machine was showed to the public.
  • March 1 – Ethiopia defends its independence in the Battle of Adowa against Italy.
  • April 3 – La Gazetta dello Sport issues its first number.
  • On April 6 the opening ceremony of the 1896 Summer Olympics took place.
  • May 27 – The deadliest tornado in USA history hit Missouri. The affected city was St. Louis and the kill count was of 255. 1,000 more people were injured and the estimate of the damages was of 2.9 billion dollars.
  • June 15 – An earthquake hits Sanriku, Japan, killing 27,000 people.
  • August 16 – Gold is discovered in the Klondike. The event led to the 1897 Klondike gold rush.
  • August 27 – The shortest war in history took place between Britain and Zanzibar. Its length was 38 minutes.

  • Three people born in 1896 were to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: American Philip Showalter Hench (born on February 28, died in 1965) together with Austrians Gerty Cori (born on August 15, died in 1957) and Carl Ferdinand Cori (born on December 5, died in 1984).
