1846

1846 will remain in history as the year in which the Mexican-American War started with the premises of Texas border lines. It was to end in 1848.

Important events

January 5 – The territory of Oregon is no longer shared between America and the United Kingdom. The decision was taken by the United States House of Representatives. One month later the “Oregon Spectator” became the first newspaper located on the pacific coast of the country.
February 19 – The government of the newly formed Texas State is officially formed and operational.
April 25 – Problems appear between America and Mexico when talking about the Texas boundaries. On May 8 the first major battle in the Mexican-American War takes place in Rio Grande. The official declaration of war was given by USA on May 13. On June 10 the California Republic declared its independence from Mexico. The Mexican-American War went on in the period between 1846 and 1848.
May 17 – Adolphe Sax patents the saxophone.
October 16 – The first ever use of ether anesthesia is done by American dentist William T.G. Morton at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
December 28 – The United States of America admit Iowa as its 29th state.

In 1846, at unknown dates, Liberia declared its independence and the Rotary printing press was invented.

January 5 – German writer Rudolf Christoph Eucken, a Nobel Prize laureate. In the same year, on May 5, Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz was also born. He would receive the same prize.
February 18 – English actor Wilson Barrett, died in 1904.
February 26 – American entertainer and world renowned hunter Buffalo Bill, died in 1917.
April 4 – French writer Comte de Lautreamont, died in 1870.
July 17 – Japanese Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi, died in 1866.
November 25 – American advocate Carrie Nation, died in 1911.
