A razor is a sharp tool that is used to remove hair from one’s body.

History

Radios have been recorded since Britain’s Bronze Age. This type of razor was made of bronze and generally maintained an oval shape. They had a small tang, which protruded from one short end.

In the mid-1800s a safety razor was developed by the Kampfe Brothers. It used a forged blade that did not need continuous sharpening.

In 1903, King Camp Gillette created the safety razor that had disposable blades. He realized that he could make a profit margin by creating these disposable blades, which were not expensive. He founded the American Safety Razor Company in 1901; the name was changed to Gillette Safety Razor Company in 1902. The razor was a think blade and protected the skin from the risk of getting deep cuts and allowed the user to safely shave himself or herself.

Prior to the 20th century, straight razors (which were also referred to by many as cut-throat razors) were the most common. These razors featured open steel blades. Today these razors are used mostly only by barbers.

Electric razors

These are also often called the electric dry shaver. It is commonly constructed with a rotating or oscillating blade. The razor does not require the shaver to use any sort of lathering material and is powered by a small motor, usually with rechargeable batteries. The first one was invented by American Jacob Schick in the 1930s. Later, the Remington Rand Corporation improved upon it. Professor Alexandre Horowitz, a researcher associated with the Netherlands’ Philips Laboratories further developed the electric razor by allowing the cutters to remove the hair entering the head of the razor.

Other razors

• Utility Knife. This is a tool that often is used at grocery stores. It is comprised of a holder and is approximately 1 inch by 3-4 inches. These are usually either metal or plastic.

• Potato peeler. Refers to a wooden, plastic or metal handle with a metal blade attached that is used to peel the skin off vegetables.

• Razor wire has sharp edges that are designed to prevent humans from passing through them. It is sharper than barbed wire.
