Game

From ArticleWorld

A game can come in many forms. They can be physical activities, mental challenges or some combination of the two. Some are solitary, some are cooperative, and some are competitive, but they all have a few things in common. All games are derived from a set of rules, have a goal to be obtained, and are intended to be entertaining.

The study of games

When studying games, anthropologists divide them into three basic categories, games of skill, games of strategy, and games of chance. Games of skill include games like hopscotch and target shooting. Games of strategy, often board games, include checkers and tic-tac-toe. Games of chance include gambling games, like craps and poker, as well as board games requiring the rolling of dice, like shoots and ladders. There are mixed games as well. Most sports, as well as many gambling games, require both skill and strategy.

Solitaire

Games involving a single player are sometimes referred to as solitaire games. Single player cards games are especially known by this name. Types of solitaire games can include most computer games, many video games, most puzzles, and of course, solitaire card games. Most of these games have a multi-player version as well. Double solitaire, some computer games and most arcade games have a one player and a multi-player version.

Topics

Games focus on a huge variety of topics. Many mimic reality. The Game of Life, Monopoly, the numerous computer simulation games, and the many games focusing on the strategies of war are just a few. Fantasy and science fiction subjects are popular with video and computer games. Famous sports figures, and other celebrities, are often the subject matter in games as well.

There are board games, car games, computer games, arcade games, and portable games. No matter how many people are present, or where they are, there is a game that can be played for education, monetary gain, or just plain entertainment.
