Semiconductors are those solid or liquid materials which, at room temperature, exhibit electrical conductivity which is intermediate between that of an insulator and a conductor. The electronic properties of such materials can be altered by physical changes like temperature rise and focus of light energy. Conductivity of such materials can also be altered by the addition of certain amounts of impurities in them. The fact that the conductivity can be increased or decreased has lead to several applications of semiconductor technology in electrical engineering.
