Human languages are a natural phenomenon which have evolved over time and comprise a system of symbols governed by rules. The symbols are arbitrary in that they are assigned and can mean different things in different cultures. The study of languages is called linguistics and the classification of natural languages falls into three, not mutually-exclusive, categories – genetic, typological and areal, or geographical.
