Ecology is that branch of biology which deals with the study of the relationship between living organisms and their environment. This environment includes both the physical and biological surroundings.

The term ecology was introduced by the German biologist Ernst Haeckel (d. 1919). It is derived from two Greek words, ‘oikos’ and ‘logos’ meaning ‘house’ and ‘study’ respectively.

Bionomics, bioecology and environmental biology are some other terms used to refer to the science of ecology.
