A calendar is a way of measuring large units of time, such as days, weeks, months and years. Early calendars were often based on the movements of the sun, moon, or other heavenly bodies. Days in calendars are generally given a numbered date, and both are repeated in cycles. These cycles often bear no relationship to each other. An example of this is the current Gregorian calendar, which includes weeklong, repeating cycles of days that continue independently of the repeating monthly cycles of numbered dates. Thus, a Friday that falls on March 24, 2006 will not fall on the same date in 2007.
