Trifle

From ArticleWorld

A trifle is part of English cuisine. Specifically, a trifle is an English dessert. It has a thick or solid custard and fruit. It also has fruit juice, sponge cake, and a modern trifle has gelatin dessert and whipped cream. A trifle is usually arranged into layers with the fruit and the sponge cake on the bottom of the trifle and the custard and the cream on top of the trifle. Some trifles have a small bit of alcohol in them. The alcohols in trifles are usually port wine, sweet sherry, or Madeira wine. Most trifles use fruit juice instead of alcohol because the juice is needed to moisten the cake. Trifles that are created withy sherry are sometimes called sherry trifle or a high church trifle. One popular variety of a trifle has the sponge cake soaked in liquid gelatin dessert when the trifle is made which allows the trifle to settle when it is refrigerated. The sponge cake and the jelly come together to produce a unique and pleasant texture if the trifle is made correctly. There can’t be too much jelly in the trifle or bonding will not happen between the jelly and the sponge cake. Trifles are often served at Christmastime instead of the heavier Christmas pudding. There is also a Creole trifle that is also called a Russian cake. Bakeries in New Orleans make the trifle from leftover and imperfect baked goods. In Italy, a trifle is called Zuppa Inglese.
