The Matrix is named after the virtual reality that is the corner stone for this trilogy. This movie racked in $171 million in the United States and $460 million worldwide. The success that this movie brought was unexpected and led to the other two movies being completed so that the trilogy could be complete.

What is the Matrix?

The Matrix is a virtual reality that was used to quell the humans within it to believe that it was a real world. They in turn were used as a bioelectric battery to sustain the machines.

The One

Throughout the movie there were references to the One and the importance of the one. The character of Neo it is discovered is this One that is to put an end to the war between the humans in the real world and the machine both in the Matrix and outside of it.


Theology of the characters

This is a base reflection of the roles that the characters represent based on multiple sources. The name first is the most dominant role that they play in the movie based on theology.

  • Neo = Jesus
  • Morpheus = John the Baptist/God
  • Trinity = Virgin Mary
  • Cypher = Judas
  • Agent Smith = Satan/Antichrist
  • Tank=Holy Ghost

Movie in a nutshell

The movie has many under tones that reflect themes of Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism, and philosophy. These are themes that are shown throughout the movie and in many respects in the trilogy.


New Concepts

The photography in the Matrix raised the standard for cinematography in all future movies. It showed a means of rotating visuals similar to the CGA profiling that a computer can do.

They also did a rather striking portrayal of many of the respective fighting styles witht he stances and many of the strikes. The fights were glamorized a bit, but each character had a kata which is something that isnät seen in movies created today with the exception of certain ones that Jet Li and Jackie Chan have done.
