History

The English use of the word shampoo stems back to 1762 and meant “to massage.” In its early use, hairdressers in England would create shampoo by boiling soap in soda water and adding herbs that would add health and fragrance to the hair. Clearly, soap and shampoo were both very similar made with a type of detergent. Eventually, shampoo evolved to target specific needs of hair rather than the overall body.

Hair conditioner is used following shampoo to improve the texture and condition of the hair (and the appearance).

2-in-1 products are shampoos and conditioners in one product, often used to save time or when traveling to condense the amount of toiletries packed.

Use

Shampoos are used to clean hair by stripping oil (which collects dirt, styling products and skin flakes) from the hair.

Soap vs. shampoo

Although both soap and shampoo clean, soap is generally too harsh to be used on the hair. Shampoo allows for proper detergency without degreasing, ability to form bubbles, easy-to-rinse formula, a good finish without washing the hair, minimum irritation of the skin or the eyes, no hair damage, low toxicity, biodegradable properties.

Specialty shampoos

Shampoos are made for people with a variety of needs, including:

  • Anti-dandruff shampoos, which contain fungicides.
  • All natural or organic shampoos.
  • Shampoo for infants and young children, which is gentler than others.
  • Animal shampoo, which is especially designed for the needs of animals.
