Pub games

From ArticleWorld

Pub games are traditionally indoor games, which are played in pubs, bars and taverns. Over the years, they have been particularly popular in England.

History

Pub games have been played since the days of the Roman taverns. Starting with checkers and card games, games that are still played today, to the more modern electronic quiz machines and video games. The first law regarding pubs was actually a ruling restricting indoor pub games. Henry VII felt they were distracting the pubmen from archery.

Examples

Many games have gained popularity in pubs and bars. Cribbage, darts, dominoes, backgammon and chess have all been associated with pubs. Billiards and poker are classic pub games as well. Drinking games also naturally fit into this category, with one example requiring one to drink a yard of ale. In places where gambling is legal, slot machines have also made their way into pubs and bars also. Still popular in parts of England, the game of Skittles is the original game of bowling, as it is known in the United States. Toad in the hole and pitch penny are two similar pub games that require the players to toss coins into a hole, box, or at an agreed upon spot on a chair seat.
