OS/400

From ArticleWorld

OS/400 (i5/OS) is an operating system for the OS/400 (iSeries) minicomputers, designed and implemented by IBM. OS/400 and AS/400 were both introduced in 1988 and have been supported and updated ever since. At the time of writing, the latest version of OS/400 is V5R4, introduced in February 2006.

The OS is designed as a turnkey system, requiring little intervention and administration. Although it is not a native GUI system, it includes a web-based administration interface, the iSeries Navigator. It can also share a hard drive with AIX or Linux.

Features

OS/400 is highly regarded for its stability, making it a fully competent turnkey system. Among the more important are:

  • The DB2 Universal Database, a DB2 engine integrated into the system. DB2UD does not require installation or additional license costs.
  • Completely object-based architecture, allowing the environment to be changed without affecting the installed applications.
  • IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) support.
  • IBM Java for i5, which is an optimized Java virtual machine, specially modified for better performance under the i5 operating system.

OS/400, as well as its host architecture, provides backwards compatibility support for previous platforms developed by IBM. Most administrative tasks are wizard-guided, making OS/400 a viable and strong solution in its field.
