Matchmaking

From ArticleWorld

Matchmaking is an expert-run process of introducing two people. Usually matchmaking services are employed with the hopes of finding a mate for marriage.

With information technology, the personalized attention of an expert has, on many occasions, been fazed out to use game-like rules in a structured dating system. In many cultures, however, human matchmakers are still a popular alternative.

Matchmaking around the world

In some cultures, this role is considered highly professional.

  • The Hindu astrologers were often thought to be essential advisors. Where arranged marriages prevail, the astrologer made it difficult for reluctant children to object to their parents wishes by saying that the stars bless sanctify the marriage. The tarot has also played a role in matchmaking.
  • Social dance has a role, especially in North America where the line and square dance were popular. This has often been employed, informally, in matchmaking. Before modern technology made more people accessible, marriage-age children on the farm could only meet at such gatherings.
  • In Western cultures, clergy probably played a key role, as it was one of the functions of the village priest in Medieval Catholic villages. Matchmaking is also considered a Talmudic duty of rabbis in Jewish communities.
  • The Singapore Social Development Unit is run by the city-state’s government and offers professional counsel and dating system technology. In this role, the matchmaker is a bureaucrat; every citizen in Singapore has access to these matchmaking services.
  • Matchmaking is even known in the business world, B2B Matchmaking, Business Events or Brokerage Events.

Matchmaking today

Matchmakers trade on the belief of romantic love, and a variety of dating systems (like today’s Web-based technology) is used as a matchmaker in itself. Surprisingly, the popularity of Web-based dating systems has resulted in a resurgence of the popularity of the traditional matchmaker. The Web makes these systems accessible, yet many people prefer employing human intelligence as well as personal touches.
