Judith Leiber was born in 1921 in Budapest Hungary with the given name of Judith Peto. When she became an adult, she became a fashion designer and she now designs fashions and fashion accessories. She designs handbags mostly that are very high end.

Her early life

Judith Peto was the first woman to join the handbag maker’s guild in Budapest, Hungary. She was a Jew and she escaped to Switzerland from Hungary during the Holocaust with her father. After World War Two, she began making handbags in her house and then in a studio. She also met her husband in Switzerland who was named Gerson Leiber and she came to The United States with him in 1948.

Her career

She worked as a handbag designer for many companies for many years. And the, in 1963, she opened up her own boutique and also sold handbags. Because of her handbags, Judith Leiber became a leader in the field of elegant fashions and fashion accessories. Her handbags are sold at exclusive boutiques all over the world and are very pricey. In addition, her handbags are considered to be a status symbol for many women including some First Ladies.

Awards

In 1994, Judith Leiber got a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers. Many samples of Leiber’s work can be found in the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. He work can also be seen in London.
