Infidelity

From ArticleWorld

Infidelity is used to describe unfaithfulness in a monogamous relationship.

Uses of the word

In a religious meaning, infidelity is the absence of faith to a religion. One who lacks this faith is called an infidel. For the purpose of a relationship, infidelity is synonymous with unfaithfulness. It occurs when someone refuses to comply with sexual or emotional norms, like a commitment to a monogamous relationship. In the case of a polyamorous relationship, this commitment is to the group. Adultery is infidelity within the confines of marriage. Adultery is grounds for divorce in states that require a fault. In history, adulterers suffered severe punishments, like stoning and imprisonment.

Defining the meaning

Meaning can vary by couple or group as to what constitutes infidelity. One person may see flirting as an act of infidelity. The next person may view flirting as harmless but see petting as wrong. Some couples may accept oral sex or sexual intercourse with others but be more upset if the other engages in an emotional relationship.

Those in a heterosexual partnership may allow partners to engage in homosexual or bisexual acts with others. This works in reverse, too: members of a homosexual couple may allow heterosexual infidelity. Typically, these acts are called experimentation.

Avoiding confusion

Since infidelity can mean different things to different couples, it is important that a couple discuss their views before entering a committed relationship. Through this communication they should come to an understanding and agreement as to what constitutes infidelity in a relationship. This is the most effective way to avoid disappointment in the future.
