How to install ATI Graphics Drivers in Windows Server 2003 X64 Edition

If you are using Windows 2003 X64 Edition, you may have problems making the ATI drivers to load at boot time. This happens because, although the drivers are installed, Windows 2003 does not try to make use of accelerated graphics at first.

Procedure

  1. Start by installing the latest ATI drivers. You can download them for free on http://www.ati.com .
  2. After you have installed them, right-click on the desktop and select Properties. Go to the Settings tab (in the upper part of the window). Click the Advanced button and go to the Troubleshoot tab.
  3. You will find a slider labeled "Hardware acceleration". Slide it to Full (all the way to the right).
  4. Click OK to close the window. Repeat the step above for each monitor if you have more monitors.

Although this may seem rather weird (an operating system not trying to make full use of a hardware component), it is actually to be expected. Windows 2003 is optimized for server use and not for desktop use. This is why it will ignore the peak performance of high-end components like graphics or sound cards.

If you are using Windows 2003 on your desktop and are not a power user, you should consider switching to a desktop-oriented Windows edition. Windows XP Professional or Home Edition with Service Pack 2 may better suit your needs.
