How to handle your school bully

From ArticleWorld

To handle your school bully will not only require guts but also intelligence and ingenuity and sometimes even parental interference. A bully is a boy or girl who is mean and hurtful and picks on someone else as a way to get power or to feel important. Some bullies even threaten people and make them do things they do not want to do. You need to fight the problem yourself and with your own wit and cleverness but here are some guidelines that may help you face up to the bully better.

A few suggestions

  1. Get yourself enrolled in any self defense class and let it be known in school that you are doing so. You may never face the problem of people picking on you but it will give you the confidence to face people and situations should the need so arise.
  2. Empower yourself and teach yourself to act firm and unafraid. Bullies generally pick on people whom they can intimidate with words and speech. If you are a poor speaker and get easily overawed then you need help to overcome this handicap. You can practice speaking in front of a mirror or get a friend or a parent (if you have confided in your parents) to play the role of a bully.
  3. Find other friends. You need not belong to a group that has the most popular girl as its head. Find your own circle of friends and do well in whatever you do and before long you will have people queuing up to join your group.
  4. Do well at studies and get good grades, let not the behavior of the bully affect your studies and in most cases ignore the bully.

Do’s

  • Make it clear to the bully that their behavior does not affect you by not reacting to whatever they say and even making jokes at your own expense.
  • Help others not become victims of the bully by standing up to him/ her when you find the bully picking on someone.

Don’ts

  • Don’t involve your parents unless and until the situation really requires it.
  • Don’t react to the bully’s remark, this is the best way of getting your back, ignoring them.
