How to get started with Knoppix Linux

From ArticleWorld

Knoppix Linux is a live-CD Linux distribution. It comes pre-loaded with a significant amount of software, making it an ideal choice for beginners who are just making their way into the Linux operating systems. Although Knoppix is a live-CD (you boot from the CD straight into a full-featured desktop without having to install it), you may want to install it on your hard-drive as a full-fledged (and much faster than its CD-only counterpart) operating system.

Steps

You will obviously need the Knoppix Linux CD. Linux is Free Software, so you can download the ISO for free from http://www.knoppix.org/ . Most mirrors allow you to use a download manager, too. After you downloaded the CD, you should also check its MD5 checksum to make sure it was correctly downloaded (chances are that it was, so if you do not know what MD5 is and you do not want to know, you can safely skip this). You can use any CD-writing program for writing it. Do avoid using Windows XP's CD burning software, since it cannot handle ISO files. After you have a Knoppix CD available, you can proceed to the first step.

  1. Reboot your computer from the CD. You may have to change your BIOS settings to instruct your computer to boot from the CD instead of the hard drive. Refer to your motherboard's mainboard for instructions on how to do this. If all goes well, the computer will boot the Knoppix Linux operating system and give you a desktop. Everything is quite slow here, because the entire OS runs from CD, but it should be usable.

  • Optional step: you can also install Knoppix to a hard-drive. To do so, open a terminal window and type:
su

Now, type:

knx-hdinstall

and follow the instructions.
