How to create a DMG file on an Apple Mac

From ArticleWorld

DMG (Disk Image) files are very common on Macs. They allow you to easily manipulate disk images. In terms of comparison, they are much like the common ISO CD image files, but are more closely integrated with the Mac OS system.

You can easily create your own DMG files by following the steps below. You will obviously need a computer running Mac OS, either the PPC version or the x86 (in beta at the time of writing) version.

Utilities for reading, writing or creating DMG files on other platforms (like Linux or Windows) do exist, but they are not described here.

Steps

  1. Create a folder of your choice on the disk. Copy all the data you want on the image to that folder. After you have copied everything you need, right-click on the folder and choose Get Info to find out how much space the contents take.
  2. Open the Disk Utility and click on New Image. Create a image that is big enough for the data to fit. You should set the encryption to None in this step, and choose Read/Write as the Format. Once created, the image will be automatically mounted. If it is not mounted, right-click on it and choose Mount.
  3. Once it is mounted, simply copy the contents of the folder into the mounted disk image. After everything has been copied, unmount it.
