How to change your desktop background

From ArticleWorld

The desktop is a very important place of our work, since it's one of the things we see just about every day. This is why some of you might want to have it less boring than the default. Changing the desktop background is, as you will see, very easy.

Windows

To change you desktop wallpaper on Windows:

  1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and click on Properties from the menu that shows up. This will open the Display Properties window.
  2. On the upper part of the Display Properties window, click on Desktop (Windows 2000 or later), or Wallpaper (Windows 98 and earlier).
  3. If the wallpaper you want appears in the long list on the left, you can select it from there. However, if you downloaded a wallpaper from the Internet or got it from a friend, chances are it's in another directory than Windows expects. If this is the case, go to the next step.
  4. On the right side, you will see a Browse button. Clicking it will launch a dialog from which you can select what file to use as a desktop background.
  5. Click Apply to see how the wallpaper looks now. You can still change it now, and if you want to close the dialog without keeping the new wallpaper, clicking Cancel will revert the old settings before closing the dialog. Once you are happy with your selection, click OK.

KDE

If you are using KDE under a Linux, BSD or similar Unix/Unix-like system:

1. Right-click on the desktop and choose Configure desktop. This will open a new dialog. On the left side, you will see a number of options. Chances are that the Backgrounds option is the first one.

2. In the Background area, you have three options to choose:

  • No picture, which will use a plain color you select
  • Picture, which will use a single picture
  • Slide show, which will cycle between more images

3. If you choose a Picture background, you can use the Browse button right near the pull-down menu with the pictures to select the image.

4. If you choose a Slide show, click Setup. This will open a new dialog with a list you can edit and pick the pictures you want to cycle

Miscellaneous

If you are using Windows, you should be careful downloading executables. If you download something advertised as a wallpaper pack with an .exe, .bat or .com extension, check it for viruses.

You can get wallpapers from many sources. www.deviantart.com and http://www.digitalblasphemy.com/ are some of the best.
