How to change the default photo display program in Windows XP

From ArticleWorld

When you install some applications (like photo manipulation files) they will "hijack" the photo extensions, meaning that the system will try to open all photos with the hijacked extensions using that application. Therefore, Windows will no longer use your favorite program, but the one you have just installed.

This can be solved though, by following an easy procedure. You may also want to do this if you own a Dell PC and you don't like JASC Paint, the default viewer with which it comes pre-loaded.

Steps

  • Go to the Start Menu and enter the Control Panel. If you have not done so already, you should switch to Classic View using the "Switch to Classic View" option on the left.
  • Now go to Folder Options. This will open a new window with a few tabs in the upper part. Go to the third tab which says "File Types".
  • From the list of types, scroll down to JPG and highlight it. You can change the program with which it is associated by clicking "Change".
  • You should change the association of any other extension you may need. JPG/JPE/JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF and TIFF are the most common formats.

Suggestions

If you run Windows XP, you probably have Microsoft's Image and Fax Viewer installed, which is a convenient tool. However, you may also want to have a look at IrfanView, which is a freeware image viewing and manipulation program with a lot of functions. ACDSee may also be a good alternative, but it is not freeware.
