How to allow limited Windows accounts to burn CDs

From ArticleWorld

Windows XP comes with a rather under-used feature of burning CDs. The fact that few people use it is mostly occurring due to the fact that it is quite limited (no support for burning ISO files, limited customization options etc.)

Nevertheless, this can make it a good option for users with limited accounts. While this ensures that they have somewhat limited abilities of using their computers to duplicate copyrighted material, it also provides them with a more convenient solution than floppy disks. Here is how to enable this feature for users without administrative privileges.

Steps

  1. Go to Start, Run and, in the text box, type regedit.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and find the key called AllocateDASD.
  3. Double-click on the AllocateDASD key. This will pop up a dialog window that allows you to set its value. Set it to 2.

If you have Windows XP Professional, you can go for the shorter way:

  1. Go to Start, Run and execute secpol.msc
  2. Go to Local Policies, Security Options. In the list that appears on the right, choose Devices, Allowed to Format and eject removable media. Assign this to Administrators and Interactive Users.

Note

You should instruct your users about how to use this feature, as it can leave behind a lot of files and clutter disk space.
