Clerks. is the seventh movie for Kevin Smith but the first in the Jersey Trilogy. It introduces some of his most well known characters including Jay and Silent Bob played by Jason Mewes and Kevin himself, respectively. The film is shot in black and white. It was made on a budget of less than $30,000.

Accolades

At the 1994 Sundance Film Festival, attention for the film was passed through word of mouth. It caught the attention of Miramax. The MPAA originally gave the film an NC-17 based solely on its explicit dialogue. Miramax went to court over the rating and got it reduced to a commercially friendly 'R' rating. At the Cannes Film Festival that same year, Smith was awarded the Award of the Youth and the Mercedes-Benz Award. In addition, the film was nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards including Best First Feature, Best First Screenplay and Jeff Anderson for Best Debut Performance. 'Total Film magazine voted Clerks the 16th overall best comedy of all time in 2000.

Spin-offs

Clerks is the Smith film with the most spin-off products.

  • Clerks: The Animated Series was a series of six animated episode that were based on the movie.
  • A sequel to the film tentatively titled Clerks II is in postproduction as of 2006.
  • Kevin Smith wrote a series of comic books titled Clerks that feature many of the same characters from the movie.
  • T-shirts, comic books and Dante and Randal action figure dolls have been produced.
