A thermometer is a device used for measuring temperatures of the human body, the atmosphere, chemical reactions, etc.

There are many types of thermometers, medical ones being the most common. Medical thermometers include oral, rectal, multipurpose, eardrum and basal thermometers. Those used for other purposes include thermistors, thermocouples, resistance thermometers and optical pyrometers.

Galilee Galileo (1564-1642) is generally credited with the invention of the thermometer. Daniel Fahrenheit (1686-1736) invented the modern mercury and alcohol thermometers and introduced the Fahrenheit scale. Anders Celsius (1701-1744) introduced the centigrade scale, which has now become a standard in most countries.
