The term, sex, can refer to sexual activity or to the sex or gender of an individual. In humans and most animals, there are both male and female sexes, both of which are required for procreation. An individual becomes male or female based on their genetic make-up which, in turn, affects the hormonal environment necessary to develop and provide function to human sex organs. Sex characteristics can be primary (present at birth) or secondary, which develop usually during puberty.
