Politics is defined as the process by which decisions are made in any community. It involves negotiating influence and interest groups, and managing power and will. Today politics refers primarily to the workings in and around government, with references to other institutions secondary. The practice of politics in the sense of includes and affects diplomacy and international relations, law, public policy, and finance.

The study of politics is an academic discipline known as political science, and while some political scientists analyze political theory, others study the movement of political power using opinion polls and current affairs. Political science is related to law, sociology, philosophy, communication, and history, among others.
