Epidemics occur when a disease becomes prevalent in a community at a given time that spreads faster that could reasonably be expected. It may be confined to a local area, in which case it is referred to as an outbreak; on a wider scale it is known as an epidemic and on a global scale it is a pandemic. Measles, smallpox, influenza and AIDS are some examples of causes of epidemics which have claimed thousands of lives.
