From ArticleWorld

Detective fiction, sometimes used interchangably with crime or mystery fiction, generally features a detective, usually a man and often of independent means, who uses intelligence, intuition, and a healthy dose of the scientific method seeking clues and evidence to solve a puzzling occurrence, whether murder, theft blackmail, or just 'strange goings on'. Early writings include Edgar Allan Poe's 1841 The Murders in the Rue Morgue and Wilkie Collins's 1860 The Woman in White
