Computer science deals with the study of the principles and use of computers – devices which process and store data. The study of computer science includes the study of (i) the architecture and design of computer systems, (ii) software that runs the computer and (iii) theory which includes the study of data structures and algorithms apart from other mathematical techniques.

Although the first programmable calculator was proposed in 1837 by Charles Babbage, the systematic study of computer science as a separate discipline did not begin until around the time of World War II, when electronic digital computers were introduced.
