Carbohydrates are chemical compounds that in addition to providing energy can be stored as a future energy source. They are the major energy producing molecules for organisms. Carbohydrates vary in length. They are classified according to their length and called monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides. The conversion of carbohydrates to energy takes place via to major pathways, the Krebs cycle and the Citric acid cycle. Carbohydrates are an essential part of the diet as a deficiency may result in a reduction in neural function.
