A mobster helps the widow of a friend, who left his financially challenged company to his widow. And the widow owes money to some other gangsters. The mobster sees a way to free her from her debts and help a struggling singer attain her career. But other competing interests are caught in up the mix and present difficulties.

Plot

Chili Palmer(John Travolta)observes the murder of a friend, Tommy Athens, who was in the music business. Chili wants a fresh start, anyway, because the film business is not what he expected. He wants to help the widow, Edie(Uma Thurman)get back on her feet. The business had been slipping because the company owes a band and its gangster sponsor, Sin LaSalle(Cedric the Entertainer)plenty of money. It’s also an opportunity for him to help a struggling singer, Linda Moon(Christina Milian). But she’s tied to another group of mob hustlers, Nick Carr(Harvey Keitel)and Raji(Vince Vaughn).

This is where the folded plot becomes thorny because:

  1. Chili is aware that Tommy’s killers know he observed the murder.
  2. Chili has to deal with two other sets of gangsters. 3)Chili can’t do much for Linda until her handlers are paid off. 4)The band still wants the money Edie owes them.

Comic relief is offered by Raji’s gay bodyguard, Eliot(The Rock) whom Chili befriends and shows acceptance of his gay lifestyle. This will prove to be quite valuable for Chili in the long term.

Resolution

As the Russian mob goes after Chili, Raji and Nick’s hit-man kill the mob hit-man by mistake. Raji, very angrily, kills his own hit-man. The Russian mobsters go after Nick, while Nick is discussing matters with Sin LaSalle. LaSalle kills the Russian. Chili frames Nick for the murder to the police. Eliot refuses to kill Chili for Raji because of the kindness Chili has shown him. Raji gets done in. Linda Moon gets her career and Edie is financially saved. His good intentions turned bad conditions into great situations.
