Films

The “Red Curtain Trilogy” includes Luhrmann’s three films. The first, Strictly Ballroom, was released in 1990 and starred Paul Mercurio and Tara Morice. In 1996, Luhrmann released his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet aptly titled William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The film starred Leonardo DiCaprio as the melancholy Romeo Montague and Claire Danes as the young Juliet Capulet. An interesting point, the movie was filmed in a modern setting (Verona, California instead of Verona, Italy)but relied on much of Shakespeare’s original text as dialogue. The movie included many other notable actors such as Brian Dennehy as Romeo’s father, Paul Sorvino as Juliet’s father and John Leguizamo as Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt. His third movie, Moulin Rouge!, was released in 2001 to critical acclaim. The film starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor as ill-fated lovers. It was by far the most lavish of all three movies. He is said to be working on a fourth film set in Australia’s Outback. The film will star Nicloe Kidman and Russell Crowe. It is said to be an epic and is compared to Gone With The Win.
