1899 was a year that did not provide history with many important events. The most important one is considered the first ever Peace Convention with the signing of the Hague Convention.

Important events

  • The first of January saw Queens and Staten Island become a part of New York and the end of the Spanish rule in Cuba
  • January 19 – Sudan is formed under an Anglo-Egyptian rule.
  • February 14 – On the popular Saint Valentine’s Day in 1899 the United States Congress approved the use of voting machines in federal elections
  • On the 6th of March a breakthrough in medicine is done through the act in which Aspirin is patented by Felix Hoffman and Bayer registers it as a trademark
  • The first woman ever to be executed in the electric chair was Martha M. Place and the execution took place at Sing Sing on the 20th of March
  • July 29 – The first ever peace conference was held and the result was the signing of the Hague Convention
  • In December a breakthrough in mathematics is achieved when David Hilbert creates the now known modern concept of geometry.

Some to become important figures were born in 1899. Some of them were to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine years later: Paul Hermann Müller (born January 12), Max Theiler (born January 30), Georg von Békésy (June 3), Fritz Albert Lipmann (June 12), Albert Claude (August 24) and Frank Macfarlane Burnet (September 3). Other figures to become Nobel Prize laureates that were born in 1899 include: John Hasbrouck van Vleck (March 13), Friedrich Hayek (May 8), Yasunari Kawabata (June 14), American writer Ernest Hemingway (July 21) and Miguel Angel Asturias (October 19).
