1867 is best known in history due to the changes that Japan witnessed. The former Emperor died and a new one took his place.

Important events

  • The first day of the year held the opening of the John A. Suspension Bridge between Cincinnati and Covington. It was the longest such type of bridge in the world.
  • January 8 – The districted of Columbia made it legal for African-American men to vote.
  • January 30 – Emperor Komei of Japan died. On the 3rd of February Prince Mutshuhiot became Emperor Meiji of Japan. He would later marry Ichijo Masako. She would be known afterwards as Lady Haruko.
  • March 1 – United States of America admits Nebraska as the 37th US state.
  • March 16 – The discovery of antiseptic surgery becomes official because of the publishing of an article by Joseph Lister in “The Lancet”.
  • March 30 – Steward’s folly takes place. United States Secretary of State William H. Steward purchases Alaska for 7.2 million dollars from Russia.
  • July 1 – Canada Day is created as recognition of the British North America Act.
  • September 30 – Midway Island steps under USA control.
  • December 2 – The first ever reading by British writer Charles Dickens in USA is held in a New York City theatre.

Dates of Birth

  • January 8 – American pacifist and author Emily Greene Balch. She was going to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and would die in 1961. On April 23, Danish scientist Johannes Andreas Grib Fibiger was also born. He was to receive the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and would die in 1928.
  • January 21 – German writer Ludwig Thoma and French General Maxime Weygand.
  • February 27 – Swedish composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, died in 1942
  • April 2 – German body builder and performer Eugen Sandow, died in 1925
  • April 9 – The third Prime Minister of Australia, Chris Watson, died in 1914
  • June 4 – President of Finland Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, died in 1951
  • August 12 – German writer and educator Edith Hamilton, died in 1963
  • September 28 – 35th Prime Minister of Japan Kiichiro Hiranuma, died in 1952. The 45th Prime Minister of Japan, Kantaro Suzuki, was also born in 1867, on the 24th of April. He was to die in 1948
  • December 23 – The first ever African-American millionaire Madame C. J. Walker, died in 1919
