The People's Republic of China (also known as China or PRC) is a country located in Eastern Asia. It was founded in 1949 and ever since that year it was led by the CPC (Communist Party of China).

The Chinese Civil War that started after World War II between CPC and Kuomintang ended in 1949. The same year saw the Communist party holding the territory known as Mainland China and the Kuomintang ruling Taiwan and the islands of Fujian. With this premise in mind, on the 1st of October 1949, Mao Zedong declared the new state of the People’s Republic of China, with the famous statement that “"the Chinese people have stood up.”

The following period in China history proved to be disastrous, with two campaigns (the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution) that caused numerous victims. The real reasons and the real numbers of death people are still not known today. After Mao’s death, his successor, Deng Xiaoping put the basis for economical revival. Since then, the People’s Republic of China evolved and also changed to the constitution it has today in 1982, on the 4th of December.

Geography and population

The People’s Republic of China is the largest country in Eastern Asia and is considered to be the third largest in the world by total surface. Bordering 14 other countries PRC occupies 9,596,960 km², out of which 2.8% is covered by water. Agriculturally speaking the country is poor. Because of the fact that this branch of economy was neglected several dust storms take place during spring. The Gobi Desert, which is located in the country, is expanding at an alarming rate. It is the main cause of the desert storms that hit the country and the North-Eastern parts of Asia. Affected countries include Japan, Taiwan and Korea.

China is the country with most inhabitants in the world (over 1.306 billion) with a density of 140 people per square kilometer. The country is regarded to as being a multi-ethnic one. 56 recognized ethnicities are currently a part of the nation. Population growth is a problem in PRC. Because of this a law is under effect that limits the children one family may have to one in cities and two (if the first one is a female) in other regions. The reason behind the rule of the first being a female is under effect because of the fact that, in the countryside, a man is considered to be more valuable than a woman. Basically, the economical gain from a boy being born is bigger than from a girl.
