Order of the Phoenix

The Order of the Phoenix is a fictional organization featuring in J.K. Rowling’s series of Harry Potter books. It is an organization formed to fight against Lord Voldemort and his followers, known as Death Eaters. It was founded by Albus Dumbledore when Lord Voldemort was at the height of power and mercilessly killing innocent people.

The Order was disbanded when Lord Voldemort was reduced to a grotesque powerless body by a rebounded Avada Kedavra curse. In ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, when Volddemort returns to his full body, the Order is re-established within one hour.

The Minister for Magic, refused to accept Voldemort’s return and so the Order was not recognised. The headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix were then set up at Sirius’s ancestral home at Number Twelve Grimmauld Place, London. Dumbledore became the Secret Keeper of the Order, and hence nobody could find it unless Dumbledore himself told the person, where it was.

  • Frank and Alice Longbottom – Driven into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange
  • James and Lily Potter – Murdered by Lord Voldemort
  • Fabien and Gideon Prewett – Brothers who were killed in the first War
  • Peter Pettigrew – Betrayed the Potters and joined hands with the Death Eaters
  • Benjy Fenwick – Mutilated and murdered

The surviving members of the reconstituted Order are :

  • Weasley family which include Arthur, Molly, Bill and Charlie Weasley
  • Minerva McGonagall
  • Alastor Moody
  • Rubeus Hagrid
  • Nymphadora Tonks
  • Kingsley Shacklebolt
  • Arabella Figg
  • Hestia Jones
  • Elphias Doge

Some former members were :

  • Sirius Black – Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange in the Department of Mysteries
  • Mundungus Fletcher – Arrested
  • Sturgis Podmore – Arrested
  • Emmaline Vance – Murdered by Death Eaters on information given by Snape.
  • Albus Dumbledore – Murdered by Severus Snape at the Battle of Hogworts
  • Severus Snape – True loyalty is not yet known. May be a spy for the Order of the Phoenix or may be an agent for Lord Voldemort. He is responsible for Dumbledore’s murder.
