Meredith Baxter is an American actress most famous for her 1982-1989 role as former hippie Elyse Keaton on the popular sitcom, family ties. Baxter began her career in television in the early 1970s, starring in sitcoms such as Bridget Loves Bernie. Her fame and popularity rose from 1976 to 1980, when she starred as Nancy Lawrence Maitland on the drama, family. For this role she received two Emmy nominations in 1977 and 1978.

After Family Ties, Baxter continued to work in film and television. She was nominated for another emmy in 1992 for her performance as Betty Broderick in A woman Scorned: the Betty Broderick story. In this Miniseries, she played a homicidal ex-wife. In 1993 she was nominated for a daytime Emmy for her role as a lesbian mother on a CBS afternoon special. She also guest starred with Michael J. Fox on Spin City in 2000.

Baxter was born in South Pasadena, California in 1947, to a family with strong ties to hollywood and television. Her parents were Whitney Blake, actress and sitcom writer, and radio professional Tom Baxter. While on the set of Bridget Loves Bernie, she fell in love with co-star David Birney. The two were married between 1974 and 1989, and during this time, she took the name, “Meredith Baxter-Birney.” She has married and divorced three times, and has five children.

Baxter continues to work in film and television today.
