Linda Perry is a songwriter, music producer, and lead singer that started her career by going the hard road in the clubs and coffeehouses of the San Francisco Bay Area. Her deep Blues Falsetto was unique and quickly caught the attention of Christa Hillhouse , founder of the band 4 Non Blondes. She convinced Linda Perry to not only write the music for the band, but also be their lead singer.

Rise to fame

After a number of years as a local band and the hassles of negotiating with numerous record labels the band finally settled with the family of Interscope Records. Their first album set the standard for many other bands, the album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More! was released in late 1992. This album was had more of Perry than any other member of the band with all of her own personal works and her vocals, 4 Non Blondes became an extension of her. One of her songs became an over night success and spawned a single. The song was What’s Up?


Direction of the blondes

There became inner turmoil in the band as to where to have the band take its direction. Perry wanted to focus more on the underground and experimental areas, while the rest of the band wanted to ride on the fame of the first album. In the end of 1995, Linda would leave the band. 4 Non Blondes would go to release one more song and video, but without Linda’s passion they went the way of the dodo.


Aftermath of the blondes

With the band behind her and a recording contract unfulfilled, Linda Perry managed to convince Interscope to allow her to make a solo CD. The release of her solo album, Inflight was a critical acclaim but lacked in the revenue. Interscope seemed to have lost interest in her and she was forced to tour on her own funds.


Double venture

In 1997, Linda Perry worked on two major projects. The first was the creation of her own record label, Rockstar Records. This was to serve the main purpose releasing a the band Stone Fox’s CD. She also signed one other band, 2 Lane Blacktop.

The second venture was in producing the movie Pink as The Day She Was Born, This was the one of the two that left a bad taste in her mouth.


Songwriting and producing

During this time, Linda was contacted by pop singer Pink who was seeking help in production and songwriting of her second album. She cowrite the cd and was given full writing credits to Lonely Girl And the huge hit song Get the party started. This album not only gave Linda Perry direction it also vaulted her back into the spotlight as one of the hottest producers in the music business.


Linda Perry would go one to working with the likes of Christina Aguilera, Jewel, Gwen Stefani, Melissa Etheridge, Lisa Marie Prestley, and Courtney Love.


She also saw many of the songs that she had written get her nominated for a number of Grammy Awards.
