The IEEE 802.18 is the Radio Regulatory Technical Advisory Group (RR-TAG) which is in charge of monitoring six projects on standards for radio-based systems.

Standards under consideration

The standards under consideration are as follows:

  1. The IEEE 802.11 for WLAN (wireless local area networks) .The 802.11 family refers to six over-the-air modulation techniques. There have been a number of amendments to this standard. Recent advancements in computer network technology have heralded the need for added security for users connecting to the internet.
  2. IEEE 802.15 for WPAN (wireless personal area networks) .This includes five task groups for the purpose of taking care of Bluetooth, the coexistence of WPAN with other wireless devices, high rate WPAN, low rate WPAN and mesh networking.
  3. IEEE 802.16 for WMAN (wireless metropolitan area networks) .This standard aims for the global deployment of wireless WMAN.
  4. IEEE 802.20 for wireless mobility. This targets the packet-based wireless air interface that is designed for truly mobile broadband networks.
  5. IEEE 802.21 (Handoff/Interoperability between Networks) .This standard basically is aimed for making possible the seamless handover between networks of the same type, as also the handover between different network types in what is known as Media Independent Handover (MIH).
  6. IEEE 802.22 for wireless networking. This is meant to cover areas larger than the present 802.11A/B/G networks.

The RR-TAG monitors and provides for the active participation in regulatory activities related to the above projects both at the national and international levels. The working group then puts forward its comments and policies to regulators for consideration. These regulators aim to balance the interests of all the wireless projects of the LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC).

The working group of IEEE 802.18 tries to convince telecommunication regulators to adopt its rules in the most efficient manner possible in order to avail of the benefits of advancements in communication technology.
