Healthy eating

From ArticleWorld

Healthy eating emphasizes making choices about how much or what type of food a person eats. The goal of healthy eating is to improve or maintain good health.

Suggestions

A variety of factors constitute healthy eating. Some suggestions regarding a proper nutritional diet include:

  • Overall calorie consumption.
  • Balance of major nutrients.
  • High consumption of beneficial foods.
  • Lowered consumption of detrimental foods.
  • Greater consumption of vitamins and nutrients.
  • Avoiding the consumption of food additives or food contaminants.
  • Healthful methods of food preparation.

Organizational support

Over the years many organizations — government and otherwise — have developed means of providing nutritional advice and methods to promote healthy eating habits. Some diets put a strain on businesses since they lead to a lack of productivity, namely obesity, diabetes and some other medical conditions.

The British government has recently developed a “5 a day” slogan to impress the need for people to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Promotions include portion sizes and how these portions can be added to someone's diet.

Many governments worldwide also ask businesses to encourage healthy eating habits by offering programs or healthy food in vending machines and at the cafeteria.

Healthy eating habits

It is suggested that individuals consume not just one single food but also a wide variety of food. This will minimize the chance one will become susceptible to a deficiency. By doing this, and by adhering to the federally regulated recommended nutrient intake, one is most likely to have healthy eating habits. A high nutrient diet should be maintained and sugar, salt, cholesterol and fat consumption should be minimized. Ideally, proper diet practices will result in protection from common illnesses and conditions that are related to a poor diet (like headaches, decreased sexual drive, heart disease and obesity).
