Hair styles often signify cultural, ethnic or social identity in humans.
Hair styles are often used as a fashion accessory.
Market for hair
There is a market for human (and, in some cases, animal) hair. Wig makers pay big money for hair, depending on its length, thickness and color.
Hair can also be donated via a charity like Locks of Love, which provides children who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy. In order for hair to be donated, it must be in good conditions and at least 10 inches or 25 centimeters in length.
Those who don’t cut their hair
Some religious and social groups make the decision not to cut their hair. These include: Nazirites, Sikhs, Rastafarians, exclusive Brethren women, Sadhus and some select aboriginal North American populations.
Variety
A number of different types of haircuts exist. Some include:
- Afro, which is bushy.
- Bangs, which cover the forehead.
- Beatle cut, also known as a moptop.
- Beehive, when the hair is piled on top of the head, a woman’s style that was popular in the 1960s.
- Bun, when the hair is pulled back.
- Buzz cut, extremely short.
- Bob, which became popular for the first time in the 1920s.
- Bowl cut, the same length all around the head, typically worn by men.
- Caesar cut, also known as the Clooney cut.
- A samurai’s top knot, which is known as a Chonmage.
- A comb over, which covers a bald spot.
- Cornrows, a popular African American hairstyle.
- Crew cut which is very similar to a buzz cut.
- Crop, which is a short woman’s style.
- Dreadlocks, which is popular among Rastafarians.
- Feathered
- Flattop, which is buzzed on the sides.
- French braid which is a way for women to tie their hair back.
- Layered, where the hair is cut at different lengths.
- Mohawk, which shaves both sides of the hair and spikes the hair in the middle up straight.
- Pigtails, where hair is worn long, parted in the middle and braided down each side.
- Ponytail, where hair is pulled back from the face, usually high on the head.
