Edward Regan Murphy, also known as "Eddie" Murphy, was born on April 3, 1961 in Brooklyn, New York and is an American stand-up comedian and actor. Murphy began entertaining friends and family, entertaining at his local high school, entering and winning talent contests, and working at local bars and clubs as a stand-up comedian at a very young age. He was writing his own material at the age of 15.

Murphy began his career on Saturday Night Live in 1981 at the young age of 19. Murphy stayed with SNL until 1984 before leaving television for the big screen to pursue a career in film. He made his debut opposite Nick Nolte in 48 Hours. He starred in comedies such as Trading Places, Coming to America, and Beverly Hills Cop. Murphy left the movie scene for a while in the early 1990’s but bounced back in 1996 with The Nutty Professor. This was followed by a string of successful films with Dr. Doolittle, Dr Dolittle 2, Bowfinger, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps, and voice roles as the dragon in Disney’s Mulan, and the donkey in Dreamworks’ production of Shrek. Murphy has made many comedy recordings, including one that won him a Grammy, Comedian. He also had a hit dance single entitle Party all the Timein 1986.

Murphy is currently working on a voice role in Shrek 3 which is due in theaters in 2007. He branched out and voiced the television show, The PJ’s and also was executive-producer. His trademarks is playing several parts in the same movie, usually wearing heavy makeup, and his amazing ability to do voice-overs for many different characters. Eddie Murphy’s fellow comedians voted him in the top 50 comedians in a 2005 poll, The Comedian’s Comedian. Murphy is now married to model Nicole Mitchell and has four children.
