A dominatrix or mistress is a woman who takes the dominant role in BDSM (or bondage, discipline, domination, and sado-masochistic) sexual practices and acts.

Know your role

The common title to a dominatrix is "Mistress" or "Ma'am" although there have been the male equivalent that is known as master. The Dominatrix can play either role, as either to dominator or the submissive one. Older woman-younger man relationships are much more common in female dominant relationships.

Terminology

Dominatrix is based on the word dome, which is short for dominant. The term used in dominatrix is in connection with French terminology to this word. The pronouciation of the word dome is ideally dom-MAY.

Professional vs. Lifestyle

The term dominatrix is most commonly used to describe a dominant woman professionally (or pro-domme) or one who charges money to engage in fantasy play with submissive clients. In reality, most dominatrices are not professionals.

Lifestyle dominants are people who is assertive and in control of their relationships both inside and outside the bedroom.

Recreation

Women who engage in domination recreationally are referred to as Dommes, Dominatrices, or Dominants. A high percentage of dominatrices are lifestyle dominants, and simply play the dominatrix for the pay.

Many dominatrices keep their clients true identities confidential and keep their clients lives separate from the ones in the BDSM. This is a means of allowing the clients fantasies full themselves with no fear of repercussions. This also increases the chances of the client’s return.

Personal slave

A "personal slave" or slaves, are not paying clients. A personal slave will typically perform a Domme's housework and do errands for her. Most Dommes engage in sexual activity with personal slaves, but this is not required. Some Dommes limit the sexual activity to oral sex, others engage in sexual activities.

Attire

Many stereotypes show the dominatrix in rubber, leather, or vinyl. This may be worn for a client’s appear, but most dommes will admit that they wear what they want to.
