David Sedaris

David Sedaris has made his career by using humor through the written and spoken word. An essayist and radio contributor, his subjects typically come out of his life and deal with family, relationships, jobs, and education.

Personal

Sedaris was born in Binghamton, New York in 1956 and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. He currently lives in France with his partner, Hugh Hamrick, and he also purchased an apartment in London.

Career and Works

Sedaris first became well known in 1992 with his radio essay The SantaLand Diaries that was broadcast on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Compilations of his essays have been made into books, such as Barrel Fever, Naked, and Talk Me Pretty One Day. Sedaris’ writing can also be found in Esquire and The New Yorker. Along with his literary career, Sedaris also contributes to the PRI/Chicago Public Radio show This American Life.

Sedaris has also co-written several plays with his sister Amy under the name “The Talent Family.” Among these include: Stump the Host (1993), Stitches (1994), One Woman Shoe (1995), and The Little Frieda Mysteries (1997).

Accolades and Awards

Including his book Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, Sedaris’ work has consistently found a place at the top of the New York Times Best Seller list for non-fiction. Additionally, in 2001, Sedaris was named Time Magazine’s “Humorist of the Year” and he was also awarded the Thurber Prize for American Humor.
