Toy is word most commonly used to described a self-contained form of entertainment for a child. Historical examples of toys include jacks, the rocking horse and legos. Popular today are toys not only of this nature, but also technology based toys such as video games and robots.

Toys getting their influence from other forms of culture like movies or television series often become fads and may even develop a cult following. A prime example is Star Wars toys, popular immediately before the release of the original movie through current day 2005.

This term excludes sex toys, which are specifically adult in nature.

Toy popularity studied throughout recent history indicates a circular trend, as toys popular in a parents youth may be reintroduced as new when their own children are young. Some examples of this are the clacker, pogo stick, strawberry shortcake, transformers and care bears.
