Symbolism is the use of a representation which has been bestowed with meaning and so has become synonymous with a concept. Many cultures use elaborate symbol systems such as language, religion and in the assignation of symbols to specific groupings such as plants, chemical classifications and the weather. The use of a symbol can be a very powerful tool in that it can carry meaning, intent and significance in a small icon.
