Organ failure is a term that represents the loss of function of a vital body organ. Common organs that fail are the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. Both the kidneys and the liver filter out toxins and products of metabolism and rid the body of these things. When one of these organs fails, it is not uncommon for the other to lose function to some degree as well. Dialysis of either organ is possible. The heart and the lungs are closely related and will often fail together whenever one sustains an insult.
